Jason Witten announces retirement from the Dallas Cowboys

Long-time Dallas Cowboys tight end, Jason Witten, has finally announced his retirement after almost 20 years. The award winning player had previously moved to the Las Vegas Raiders for the 2020 season. Despite being new to the team, the NFL veteran was a leader for the team’s offensive line. For the Cowboys, Witten is held in high regard as one of the greats.

Witten’s long history with the NFL

Jason Witten just announced his departure on Wednesday, January 27th to ESPN. Ever since Witten started professional football in 2003, he’d been a star. Initially starting with the Cowboys, he went on to play for them for 16 seasons. His last season before announcing retirement was in 2020 with the Raiders.

A prior resident of Westlake, Texas, Witten has spent more time than most playing professional football. With his talent, it’s no wonder he’s been able to stay so long. While playing for the Cowboys, Witten was able to win multiple awards. The NFL presented him with Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for his charity work in 2012, a well-deserved title. He’s played in multiple Pro Bowls, and has been inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Due to his long career, Witten also holds the record for most NFL games played by a tight end. He’s had the chance to play alongside several Dallas Cowboys greats, like Tony Romo, Deion “Prime Time” Sanders, and Dez Bryant.

Witten’s played in more games than most players ever see, so his retirement comes as no surprise. Despite that, longtime fans will be sad to see him leave the field for good.

Witten’s return to Cowboys Stadium

As a tribute to his many fans, Witten has expressed to retire from the Dallas Cowboys. In order to do this, he’ll have to return for at least one game with the team. News was released later on Wednesday that Witten has settled a contract with the Cowboys to return for one final game. This means he’ll be returning for one final game with the team in March.

We have our fingers crossed that all goes according to plan this season and games are able to start on time. In these strange times, it’s not uncommon for games to be postponed or star players to be on the sidelines. We can’t wait to see Witten return to Cowboys Stadium for one last ride.
